Flag Beach Corralejo: Complete Kitesurf Spot Guide

Flag Beach is the heart of the northern Fuerteventura kite scene. Side-shore wind, shallow inside bay, 6 km of golden sand and over a dozen kite schools on the same stretch. This complete guide explains the spot from A to Z.

Where to stay near Flag Beach

1. Flag Beach at a Glance

Flag Beach (also called El Burro) sits 3 km north-east of Corralejo town, inside the Corralejo Natural Park dunes. It is named after the dozens of school flags fluttering on the beach. Sand bottom, no rocks, gentle waist-deep entry inside the bay at low tide and clean waves on bigger swells outside. Open all year, statistically windiest from May to September.

2. Wind and Tides

Dominant wind direction is north-east, which translates as side-onshore from the right looking at the sea. Average summer wind 18-25 knots, with peaks above 30. Low tide opens a large protected inside lagoon that is paradise for beginners and freestylers; high tide brings choppier water and the waves outside the bar pick up. Tide swings are roughly 1-2 metres, check tide tables before planning your session.

3. Getting There

  • By car: from central Corralejo drive 4 minutes north on FV-1, free parking right above the beach.
  • By bus: Tiadhe line 8 from Corralejo stops at the natural park entrance, walk 10 minutes north.
  • By foot: 35-45 minute walk along the dunes - bring water.

4. Best Time to Ride at Flag Beach

Sweet spot is 11:00 to 17:00 when the trade wind is fully developed. Beginners benefit from low tide morning sessions (calm, shallow). Intermediates and advanced riders favour mid-tide for the small wave outside the bar. Crowd-wise, the beach is busiest in July and August between 13:00 and 16:00 - either be on the water before 12:00 or come in September for empty conditions.

5. Kite Schools on Flag Beach

Flag Beach has more concentration of certified schools than any other Fuerteventura spot: Flag Beach Kitesurf School (the oldest), Natural Sense, Red Shark, LineUp, FuerteActive, Salao Watersports and several itinerant schools (Spirit Kitesurf, Magma). All offer IKO or VDWS-certified courses with daily transport from Corralejo town.

6. Recommended Nearby Spots

  • Punta Elena Glass Beach - 2 km north, more protected on north-west days.
  • Corralejo Dunes - sunset walks 5 minutes from the parking.
  • Corralejo town - after-kite restaurants, bars and shops in 5 minutes drive.
  • El Cotillo - 20 minutes west for wave kite days.

7. Did you know…

Flag Beach hosted the first ever IKO certification camp in the Canary Islands back in 1999. Today over 80 percent of the Flag Beach kite instructors hold IKO Level 2 or higher, and the beach is one of three in Europe with permanent dedicated kite-zone marking from the local government.

8. Quick Practical Tips

  • 🗓️ Best months: May, June, September - reliable wind, less heat.
  • 🧳 Pack: 9-12 sqm kite for summer, 7-9 sqm for storms, helmet recommended.
  • 🌀 Wind window: arrive by 11:00 to set up before the rush.
  • 📋 Right of way: upwind kite gives way, downwind passes behind.
  • 🌍 Respect: Flag Beach is inside a Natural Park, stay off the dunes.
